Life and activities around Santa Ponsa

The main attraction of Santa Ponsa is the “Playa de Santa Ponsa”. This 560 m long sandy beach is guarded by lifeguards and offers a wide range of popular water sports. It is perfect for families. In addition, the water depth of the entire bay is shallow and the bottom sandy. Sailing, surfing, diving and jet skiing are easily possible here.

The small bay of Calo d’en Palliser is also very popular and is known among locals as “playa pequeña” or “small beach”. Ponsa has a strongly cosmopolitan atmosphere with a mix of British, German, Spanish, Italian and Asian bars and restaurants.

In Plaza Santa Ponsa, along the promenade and the surrounding streets there are supermarkets, restaurants, some boutiques, and small souvenir shops. Snacks are available quickly and cheaply in beach bars and chiringuito. And if you prefer haute cuisine, you also have a wide selection of restaurants here.

The most popular things to do in Santa Ponsa are simply relaxing on the beach and visiting  the nearby bars and restaurants . Due to its proximity to the Tramuntana mountains, Santa Ponsa is also popular with hikers and bikers. There you have the opportunity to climb  the popular “Climbing Forest Jungle Park”. Animal and nature fans can feed flocks of wild parrots or watch ducks in the wooded areas of the large beach. Due to the good connection to the motorway, Santa Ponsa is also an ideal starting point for island-wide excursions such as boat trips to the Dragonera Island Nature Reserve.

Events in Santa Ponsa

The  “Nit du Foc” is a traditional music and dance festival held in honour of Saint Joan. Celebrations are usually held here until the early hours of the morning.

Santa Ponsa hosts an annual Lions charity event.

Santa Ponsa’s biggest festival “Festes del Rei en Jaume” takes place over two weeks in September. The traditional program offers, among other things, a spectacular re-enactment of the battle between Moors and Christians on the beach.

On Saturdays there is always a weekly market with fresh fruit, vegetables and typical island goods.

Santa Ponsa – A place with history

The prehistoric Taraiot culture of the Balearic Islands existed in Santa Ponsa before ancient times until the Moorish period. The settlement in Puig de sa Morisca has been excavated and partially restored.

In the 13th century, Santa Ponsa hosted an event of great importance for the history of Mallorca. In 1229, King Jaume I of Aragon, also known as James the Conqueror, sent an army near the present port to recapture the island, formerly owned by the Muslim Moors.

Sa Caleta, the port entrance of Santa Ponsa, has therefore always played an important role in the history of Mallorca. This is exactly where the attack started on 10 September 1229. Today the place is marked by a large stone cross, and the historical event is commemorated every year at the “Fiesta Rei en Jaume”.

There are also several ruins from the time when the Moors and Romans besieged the Balearic Islands.
