CALVIA – A SMALL VILLAGE AND A LARGE COMMUNITY

Calvia, is a small town and the heart of the municipality of Calvia. However, the place itself is hardly influenced by tourism. Here it is quite quiet and the immediate surroundings invite you to go hiking.  Calvia is located in the southwest of Mallorca and is still one of the most authentic villages on the Balearic island of Mallorca. Here the daily routine is rather leisurely. At ensaimada and cafe con leche you meet in the cozy cafes, study the news in the daily newspapers and let the morning start slowly.

The area around Calvia is protected from north winds by the Tramuntana mountains and the numerous forests that surround the area, so you can hike all year round. Including the coastal inhabitants, the population has grown to 52,000 and tourism has made the municipality one of the most prosperous in Mallorca. Worth mentioning is the parish church of San Juan from 1245. It combines different architectural styles. The last expansion took place in the 19th century

Calvia is one of the 53 municipalities of Mallorca, part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. This place is located between the Tramuntana and Burguesa mountains. Calvia is actually a city, at least it is called “Villa Calvia”. In Calvia is also the administrative building of the same name of the municipality. The approximate area of the municipality is 145 km².  It is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Puigpuñent and Estellenc,  to the east by the island’s capital Palma de Mallorca (Palma), to the west by Andratx and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea. As of 2019, the municipality has 50,559 inhabitants, of which 18,046 are foreigners. On Mondays there is a weekly market in Carrer de Germans Montcada.

Thanks to the tax revenues of the coastal towns, Calvia is one of the richest municipalities in Mallorca, which is also reflected in its remarkable infrastructure. The municipality benefits from its favourable geographical location with more than 54 km of coastline and extensive forest areas within the island. As a result, Calvia attracts beach holidaymakers as well as hikers and nature lovers. It also attracts sailing vacationers, not to mention its beautiful marina.

But Calvia can not only enjoy an imposing backdrop, but the place also ensures the execution of a very privileged office. This is the administrative centre of the municipality of Calvia, one of the richest districts in the tourism industry in Spain. Despite the rather modest townscape with traditional village houses, fincas and some villas in and around the center, Calvia proudly presents a very representative town hall, which greets you at the entrance to the village. No less stately is the church of the village. “Sant Joan Baptista”.
