Summer may be over, but it's still pleasantly warm in parts of Spain. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, Mallorca is considered one of the sunniest places in Europe. With glorious Mediterranean temperatures, the Balearic island holds on to summer until mid-October. Even the sea is still warm enough to swim in, with an average of 22 degrees Celsius, while the pleasantly deserted beaches invite you to sunbathe and enjoy water sports.

There are also excellent opportunities for hiking and cycling in the Tramuntana, charming village markets to explore in the countryside and plenty of culture to really soak up in beautiful Palma.

The almond blossom in Mallorca

Every winter, the picturesque Balearic island of Mallorca is covered in a delicate blanket of pink, ivory and white flowers. The "snows of Mallorca", as the locals call them, transform the island's fields and mountains into a breathtaking visual spectacle as the total of four million almond trees blossom.

This unique natural phenomenon occurs all over the Balearic Islands due to the mild Mediterranean temperatures, but is best enjoyed in the central comarca of Pla de Mallorca. In the east of the island, around the municipalities of Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Son Servera, there are also many almond trees in bloom. 

The beauty of the almond fields is best explored on foot or by bicycle - in addition, there are numerous local tours to choose from. The almond blossom season on Mallorca lasts from late January to mid-February.

Visit famous attractions in Mallorca

Visiting Mallorca in winter is a completely different experience to the peak summer season. With fewer tourists and an even more relaxed vibe, the country is at its most authentic and hospitable at this time of year. Fewer crowds also lead to easier visits and shorter queues at famous sights.

The Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca

The Cathedral of Saint Mary, commonly known as La Seu, is an impressive Roman Catholic basilica built in 1229 on the ruins of a former Arab mosque - surely the pinnacle of Mallorcan architecture. It is the most important religious building in Palma de Mallorca and one of the city's most beautiful historical and artistic attractions.

The almost 7,000 square metre cathedral is located in Palma's old town and dominates Palma's coastline. Although it is most notable for its spectacular Catalan-Gothic appearance, the building displays almost all architectural styles from the 13th to the 16th century.

Highlights of the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma include the amazing rose windows through which light enters the interior and scatters into myriad hues, the imposing bell tower, the Mirada portal, the impressive chancel area and the altar, which lies beneath a massive wrought-iron canopy designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi to represent the Crown of Thorns.

With its architectural details, magnificent Spartan decorations and Renaissance stalls, this sandstone masterpiece is equally amazing inside and out. 

Caves of Drach

One of Mallorca's most famous and spectacular natural attractions, Cuevas del Drach, is located on the east coast of the island, near the resort of Porto Cristo. The site stretches over almost 1,200 metres and consists of a network of four limestone caves: The Black Cave, the White Cave, the Cave of Luis Salvador and the Cave of the French.

These underground caves are located on a site that dates back to the Miocene and are connected by paths and ladders, giving visitors the opportunity to wander and explore every detail for themselves.

Adding to the magnificent visual spectacle are the extraordinary stalactite and stalagmite formations that adorn the walls and ceilings of the caves. Everything seems to be bathed in shimmering light, thanks to Catalan architect and engineer Carles Buigas, who designed the electric lighting plan.

Also inside the Cuevas del Drach is the picturesque Lago Martel - a 170-metre underground lake discovered in 1986 by Édouard-Alfred Martel, the "father of modern speleology". This is the largest underground lake in Europe and one of the largest in the world. At the end of each visit, there is a floating concert of classical music on Lake Martel.
